FAQs

  • What works are you looking to publish?
At the moment we are looking for both one act and full length plays. We are publishing short stories and flash fiction through our online competitions and we are in talks with another publication to give those a printed home. We are not currently looking to publish novels or creative non-fiction.
  • What are the criteria for publication?
One Act Play Criteria The play must be a complete and finished play that lasts between 20 and 50 minutes. The play must be able to be performed without an interval. The play must have been received at least three public performances or one performance as part of an AETF, DAW, SCDA, AUDF, FEATS or NDFA affiliated festival. If the play has been reviewed or has received feedback from a qualified adjudicator, please provide us with details. Ideally we like to see the play performed. You can supply a video of the performance or if it is due to be performed at a major festival such as the Edinburgh Fringe then please let us know. Full Length Play Criteria The play must be a complete and finished play that lasts more than 55 minutes. The play may be performed with or without an interval. The play must have been performed and produced professionally. If the play has been reviewed or has received feedback from a professional director or producer, please provide us with details. Ideally we like to see the play performed. You can supply a video of the performance or if it is due to be performed at a major festival such as the Edinburgh Fringe then please let us know.
  • What is the submissions process?
Submit your script through our Submissions Portal. We will then read your script to assess whether it is a play we feel we can publish. If we would like to talk to you further about publishing your script we will contact you via email. Please be aware that due to the large number of scripts we receive we are unable to respond to each submission enquiry and we will be unable to provide feedback in relation to your submission unless we are able to take the publication forward.
  • Why does #FlashFiction101 now charge to enter?
Unfortunately, we became victims of our own success with the earlier iteration of the #FlashFiction101 competition and we ended up having over 500 entries per month. This put considerable strain on our resources not only with reading all the fantastic work that was submitted but also the administration, web hosting and uploaded of stories to our site took considerable time. With the competition's new structure we hope to make #FlashFiction101 more sustainable for Tortive as well as more rewarding for writers. The cost of entry is £1.50 per submission and each month the prize fund will be 50% of the total submission amount. The more writers enter the greater the prize fund.
  • Will you be running the 1001 competition again?
Yes. We are currently looking at the best way to bring those stories to an audience. The winning entries from the first 'Chiasmus' competition were exceptional pieces of work and with the permission of the authors we will hopefully be taking them forward into the new publications.
  • What will happen to all the stories previously published on Tortive.com?
We are currently in the process of migrating the stories across and they will be made available as soon as possible. This process takes a lot of time and we ask you to bear with us while we do this.
